Although it may come as a surprise to some, there are more things to visit in Vermont than just Burlington and Ben & Jerry’s. Vermont is home to a lot of lesser known attractions that can all be part of a wonderful vacation or daytrip. Here are three places that would be a great addition to any Vermont vacation:
Kingdom Trails
The Kingdom Trails are a series of trails used for mountain biking, hiking, and trail running. In the winter, the trails are also open for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. There is a welcome center located in East Burke behind the Bailey & Burke Store, and bikes can be rented across the street at East Burke Sports. With over 100 miles of trail, the Kingdom Trails are great for those who want to explore the natural beauty of Vermont.
Coolidge Homestead
Located in Plymouth, the Coolidge homestead is both the birthplace and burial site of America’s 30th president. Calvin Coolidge, known to many as “Silent Cal,” became president in 1923 after the death of Warren Harding. The Coolidge homestead is a rather special presidential site. Not only does it preserve Coolidge’s childhood home, but the site also preserves the village that Coolidge grew up in. His father’s general store, a dance hall he used as a summer White House, and a barn with a wide array of 1800s agricultural equipment are all maintained and able to be visited.
Hubbardton Battlefield
Finally, for those interested in American military history, there is the Hubbardton Battlefield. Located in Hubbardton, this battlefield is the site of the only Revolutionary War battle that took place in Vermont. On July 7th, 1777, the Green Mountain Boys fought against a substantially larger British force. Although the British did win the battle, they were unable to pursue the American forces due to heavy losses. Today, the area boasts walking trails on the battlefield and a visitor center museum. The site also features special programming on Sundays.
Each attraction has its own merits, but any would be a great place to visit. Kingdom trails and Hubbardton Battlefield offer a chance to explore the outdoors, and the Coolidge Homestead provides a snapshot of American history. Together, these sites are a great way to get a real understanding of Vermont’s character.
